[SPOCNE] Repairs @ auto chain stores?

 I remember the Jiffy-Lube horror stories, but what about service at other chain stores?  The task: New shocks for a 97 Ford Ranger The quotes (shocks + installation):  Pep Boys: $200  Sears: $250 The garage near University of Connecticut: $900 Can I trust a chain for a repair like this?
